About Kabini/Kabani/kapila river:

Origin and Course:

  • Kabini River(also called kapila) is a major tributary of the Cauvery River in southern India.

  • Originates in the Wayanad district, Kerala, from the confluence of:

    • Panamaram River

    • Mananthavady River

  • Flows eastward into Mysore district, Karnataka, joining the Cauvery River there.

  • Other tributaries and branches:

    • Makkiyad River and Periya River join near Korome and Valad.

    • Panamaram River has two branches:

      • From Banasura Sagar Reservoir

      • From Lakkidi Hills

    • Kalindi River (originating from Brahmagiri Hills) joins Kabini near Kuruva Island.

      • Papanasini rivulet joins Kalindi near Thirunelli Temple.

    • Taraka and Nugu Rivers (in Heggadadevana Kote taluk) also join Kabini.


🔹 Notable Landform:

  • Kuruva Island:

    • Formed 2 km from Panamaram confluence

    • Area: 520 acres (2.1 sq. km)

    • Known for rich flora and fauna


🔹 Wildlife and Forest Reserve:

  • Kabini Forest Reserve:

    • Located in the southeastern part of Nagarahole National Park

    • Area: 55 acres

    • Previously a hunting lodge for the Mysore Maharaja and British viceroys
