Flood-Prone Rivers Involved:

  • Silabati River

  • Dwarakeshwar River

Shilabati River (West Bengal)

Origin: Near Chak Gopalpur, Hura Block, Purulia district, West Bengal
Course:

  • Flows southeast through Bankura and Paschim Medinipur

  • Merges with Dwarakeswar near Ghatal, then forms the Rupnarayan River

  • Eventually joins the Hooghly River, which drains into the Bay of Bengal

Important Places Along the River:

  • Simlapal: Site of annual Ganga Mela fair

  • Kadam Dewli Dam (near Khatra): Small reservoir connected via canal from Mukutmanipur-Kangsabati dam

  • Ghatal: Flood-prone confluence zone with Dwarakeswar

Dwarakeswar River (Also called Dhalkisor)

Origin: Near Madhabpur, Purulia district
Course:

  • Flows through Bankura, East Bardhaman, and Hooghly districts

  • Merges with Shilabati near Ghatal, then forms Rupnarayan River

  • Eventually meets the Hooghly River


Hydrological Importance

  • The Rupnarayan River is formed by the confluence of Dwarakeswar and Shilabati near Ghatal (a flood hotspot).

  • Tributaries like Sali, Damodar, Kangsabati, Haldi, and Kaliaghai enrich the Rupnarayan-Hooghly system.
