Gujarat’s Tribal Genome Project – India’s First

  • Initiative: Gujarat has launched India’s first Tribal Genome Sequencing Project.

  • Implementing Body: Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC).

  • Coverage: 2,000 individuals from tribal communities across 17 districts of Gujarat.

  • Budget Source: Part of Gujarat’s 2025–26 State Budget.

Objectives:

  • Create a Reference Genome Database for tribal populations.

  • Enable early detection and targeted treatment of:

    • Sickle Cell Anaemia

    • Thalassaemia

    • Hereditary Cancers

  • Understand genetic markers for natural immunity.

  • Support personalised and precision healthcare.

Significance:

  • Addresses tribal health disparities and genetic vulnerabilities.

  • Integrates biotechnology in public health governance.

  • Paves the way for customised treatment plans based on ethnic-genetic profiling.

  • Supports Make in India in Genomics and Digital Health Mission goals.
