India Unveils Aluminium and Copper Vision Documents (2024–2047)

Context : At an international mining conference in Hyderabad, Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy unveiled India's Aluminium Vision Document and Copper Vision Document, both aligned with the Viksit Bharat@2047 vision.


Key Highlights:

Aluminium Vision Document

  • Production Goal: Scale aluminium production six-fold by 2047.

  • Bauxite Target: Expand bauxite production capacity to 150 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).

  • Recycling: Double aluminium recycling rate.

  • Technology & Environment:

    • Promote low-carbon technologies.

    • Ensure raw material security through policy reforms and institutional mechanisms.

  • Sectoral Importance: Aluminium is vital for:

    • Clean energy systems

    • Electric mobility

    • Modern infrastructure

Copper Vision Document

  • Demand Surge: Anticipates six-fold increase in demand by 2047.

  • Capacity Expansion: Add 5 mtpa of smelting and refining capacity by 2030.

  • Key Focus Areas:

    • Secondary refining

    • Domestic recycling

    • Securing overseas mineral assets via global partnerships

  • Sectoral Role: Copper is essential for:

    • India’s energy transition

    • Infrastructure development

    • Green technologies like EVs and solar power


Significance:

Both vision documents were developed through extensive industry consultations and aim to make India globally competitive, resource secure, and environmentally sustainable in metal production.

Vedanta welcomed the Aluminium Vision Document, calling it a pivotal step in shaping the sector’s future.
