Context: Government Boosts Turmeric Exports Through SPICED Scheme

1. Scheme Details

  • Full Name: Sustainability in Spice Sector through Progressive, Innovative and Collaborative Interventions for Export Development (SPICED)

  • Implementing Agency: Spices Board, Government of India

  • Aim: Boost export of spices, especially turmeric, through quality, safety, and market linkage programs.

The Spices Board is the Indian government regulatory and export promotion agency for Indian spices headed by a Chairman, a rank equivalent to Joint Secretary to the Government of India. The board is headquartered in Kochi.

Spices Board was constituted in 1987 under Spices Board Act 1986 with the responsibility of production/development of cardamom and export promotion of 52 spices shown in the schedule of the Act.

Major Interventions:

  • Food safety & quality assurance certifications

  • Post-harvest quality upgradation, processing & value addition support

  • Training for stakeholders (quality improvement, entrepreneurship)

  • Quality evaluation of export consignments

  • Buyer-Seller Meets (domestic & international) for direct market linkages

2. National Turmeric Board (Notified: 04 Oct 2023)

The National Turmeric Board will function under the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry, which also controls boards for tea, coffee, rubber, spices and tobacco.

Maharashtra is the largest producer of turmeric in India, followed by Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and KarnatakaIndia is the world's largest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric, with over 75% of global production.

Turmeric is also known as ‘Golden Spice’

Objectives:

  1. Promote new product development & value addition in turmeric

  2. Increase awareness & consumption in global markets

  3. Market research in potential export markets

  4. Improve export infrastructure & logistics

  5. Build sustainable supply chains

  6. Ensure compliance with quality & safety standards

  7. Capacity building of turmeric growers

  8. Document traditional knowledge on turmeric uses

  9. Encourage research & clinical trials on medicinal properties

  10. Any other objective for turmeric sector development as determined by GoI
