TALASH Initiative for Eklavya Students: Career Counselling and Skill Development

Why in news : 
The National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS), under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, in collaboration with UNICEF, has launched TALASH — a digital initiative  the first national initiative of its kind aimed exclusively at the holistic development of tribal students in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs)..

 Features of TALASH (Tribal Aptitude, Life Skills, and Self-Esteem Hub):

  • Coverage:

    • To benefit 1.38 lakh students across 28 States and 8 Union Territories

    • Currently, 189 teachers trained in 75 EMRSs

    • Nationwide rollout to be completed by end of 2025

    Objectives:

    • Promote self-awareness, career clarity, and life skills

    • Ensure inclusive and equitable education aligned with NEP 2020

    Key Features:

    1. Psychometric Assessments

      • Based on NCERT’s Tamanna initiative

      • Common aptitude test generates personalized Career Cards

    2. Career Counselling

      • Guides students to make informed, aptitude-aligned choices

    3. Life Skills & Self-Esteem Modules

      • Focus on communication, problem-solving, and emotional regulation

      • Aims to boost confidence and self-worth

    4. Teacher Enablement through E-Learning Portal

      • Trains teachers to mentor and support students academically and personally

    Significance:

    • Addresses educational and social gaps for tribal youth

    • Leverages digital platforms to ensure access even in remote areas

    • Supports the creation of future-ready tribal leaders

    Vision:

    • Long-term, evolving platform with continuous feedback and adaptation

    • Embodies the spirit of inclusive development and digital empowerment

    Institutional Background:

    • NESTS: Autonomous body under MoTA, managing EMRSs for tribal education

    • UNICEF: Global organization focused on child rights, education, and protection
