Born in 1872 at Ottapidaram, Tamil Nadu.

Influenced by Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s Swadeshi Movement and became his disciple.

Closely associated with Subramania Bharathi (poet-revolutionary) and Subramania Siva (freedom fighter).
Role in Swadeshi & Political Activities
Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company (1906):
Established to break the monopoly of the British India Steam Navigation Company (BISNC).
Launched the first indigenous shipping service between Tuticorin (India) and Colombo (Ceylon).
Symbol of self-reliance and economic nationalism.
Joined Indian National Congress after Partition of Bengal (1905).
Advocated extremist line along with Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal.
Presided over the Salem District Congress session.
Organized rallies and mobilized public in Madras Presidency.

Led strikes in cotton mills, was imprisoned (1908). His revolt in Tirunelveli & Thoothukudi briefly created a “liberated zone.”

Despite being iconic in Tamil Nadu, VOC is marginal in the national narrative, overshadowed by Gandhi and sidelined by the Congress (due to his tilt towards Tilak & involvement in Dravidian politics).
